Track and trace with Internet of Things

CYBERJAYA, Sept 7 — Being an essential component of the Internet of Things (IoT), the Track and Trace or traceability system enables retailers and consumers to determine the current and past location of unique items, products or assets.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) digital lifestyle and society department director John Tay hopes that traceability with the IoT will catch on among Malaysians, especially with businesses and society.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) and barcodes are the two common technology apart from other sensors that can be used for traceability resulting in better tracking and tracing, business decision making and also enhancing our connected digital lifestyle.

As items or objects become embedded with tags or sensors and added capability to communicate, the IoT Track and Trace promises to create new business models, improve business processes, and reduce costs and risks to business and provide value add to consumers.

“The items would have to be tagged initially before the tracking can be done as the tags would electronically store information and communicate via various available technology depending on the ecosystem.”

He said the objective of the Track and Trace system was to increase efficiency and productivity for business owners along the supply chain while reducing the cost.

Track and Trace is commonly needed for compliance, counterfeiting and competition while the solution is mostly for automated solution, supply chain, qualitative edge and serialization policies for better business operations.

“This system has proven to improve the way retailers control their businesses as it engages better with the consumers.”

He said the export and import of products can also be easily traced until the checkpoint at the next destination. Track and Trace technology has proven beneficial in various industries such as transportation, agriculture, healthcare — pharmaceutical, retail and our day-to-day digital lifestyle.

Fleet management using Track and Trace has the capability to provide real time information of logistics, drivers' driving habits, better route planning, insurance and the safety of goods at any time.

In addition, Track and Trace in agriculture especially for durian and edible birds' nest provide a new experience for customers to check the authenticity of the products. For transportation, the usage of RFID in road tax or car plates give full authority to the owners.

Plus, if the vehicles are embedded with RFID, the manufacturers would have better control of the manufacturing of the vehicle. Track and Trace would also be beneficial to hospitals as they can tag their premium assets or machinery to ease the locating process of respective assets in the hospital.

“Purchasing and selling products have been made simpler as the public do not have to worry about products being misplaced during the shipment process, the authenticity of the products, as well as safety since the system can be tracked end to end.”

Based on the 2015 Airline IT Trends Survey by SITA in association with Airline Business, two-thirds of airlines believe IoT offers clear benefits now and will generate more over the next three years.

An example of how the IoT works in airlines, Tay said was how airport security and owners can track luggage, navigate the airport and monitor the whereabouts of passengers in the airport, paperless check-in, the arrival, departure and location of their luggage via their mobile phone.

“Travellers would even be able to identify the location of their baggage on the carousel as soon as they walk into the arrival hall.

“Obtaining information would be much more convenient as business and consumers would be at liberty to obtain various information ubiquitously via their mobile phone,” he said.
